Subject: [Q] Eudora Filter Problem - Repost
I am a registered user of Eudora Pro 3.0 on a Power Mac 8200/120, 32Mb,
S7.5.5.
I find that messages from one or two sources consistently resist filtering.
The approximately 65 other filters that I have set up work flawlessly. I
have tried several versions of filter for the offending messages but none
works.
I would be most grateful for any advice.

Subject: AppleTalk like FTP (Q)
Dear Digest readers,
I have tried NetFinder, Cyberdog, NetPrezence, Fetch, BBEdit commerical
version 4.0, and Anarchie. None of these really fit the bill, although
all come close. If somebody knows of an ftp utility that supports
password ftp, gives you a Finder interface (that means dates and file
sizes, and other Finder View options in a list view, as well as an icon
view), when viewing remote files, and drag and drop capability into those
remote folder windows with a seamless integration into the Finder, please
let me know. It should work with a standard PPP connection using
OpenTransport on a PowerMac 7200/75. It should also not require Internet
Config. I'll use FinderPop to choose which applications I want to load
thanks, and don't want another utility to choose it for me. If it had
seamless integration with the open/save dialog boxes that would be great
too. Connecting to different internet servers should the same as
double-clicking a folder in the Finder, once the "folder" has been setup
with the proper ftp address. The closest I have come to this (don't flame
me!) is Windows NT 4.0 Windows Explorer and its Network Neighborhood. But
the setup for remote servers is nowhere near as simple as on a Mac, yet
once it is set up, that would be the way I'd like to view and work with
files. Anything for the Mac that does that?
Or is there a way to setup connecting a PPP connection using AppleTalk to
an internet provider that would essentially do the same thing?
Thank you.
Sincerely,

Subject: Eudora compatible multiple user e-mailer (Q)
Dear Digest readers,
I am looking for a Eudora compatible POP3/SMTP e-mailer that supports
multiple e-mail usernames and passwords without having to go into the
settings dialog box everytime I want to switch users. It should be able
to read Eudora folders and files, as well as create ones that Eudora is
capable of reading. I am using Eudora Pro 2.1.3 and can't upgrade. I
would prefer it, if it had frames where I could simply switch between
folders and user inboxes. Cyberdog did it, but then again it doesn't
create Eudora compatible mailboxes, it only can read them.
If at all possible, it should be freeware, and PowerMac native.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

Subject: Eudora Pro 4.0: first impressions
First impressions often lie. Not this time, I fear. I have used Eudora
Pro 4.0 for five days now and it does not at all compare favourably with
version 3.1.3.
Version 4.0 adds directory services, auto configuration from a server,
PureVoice voicemail handling, background send/receive, automatic
completion of nicknames while one is typing. The first three features
are of no use to me, but your mileage may vary. I find the latter two
features potentially useful (although the nickname completion feature
is somewhat disconcerting; maybe I just have to get used to it, though).
PGP 5.5 comes with Eudora Pro 4.0, but PGP 5.0 worked already with
Eudora Pro 3.1.3, so that does not qualify as a new feature.
So what *DON'T* I like about Eudora Pro 4.0?
* It only functions with the Appearance Extension/Application combo.
This is an integral part of OS 8, but can also be used with OS 7.
In my case, there was a very nasty three-way conflict between
Appearance SDK 1.0.2, Adobe Type Reunion 1.2 and Word 6.0.1. Word
reproducibly hung when both extensions loaded. I expect that many OS
7 users have not upgraded to OS 8 for compatibility reasons. It is
unpleasant that Eudora 4 insists on using code developed for OS 8
that can bring about the very problems OS 7 users try to avoid.
* Related to the preceding, my Now Menus keyboard equivalents do not
work with Eudora 4. I suspect that this is because Eudora relies on
Appearance, which in turn may not work with Now Menus. One may argue
that Now Menus is evil, but especially in Eudora I relied heavily on
its keyboard equivalents. I have now used ResEdit to add some of them,
but have no idea how to add keyboard equivalents to Message Plug-ins
such as Lower Case and Upper Case, and to the Queue/Send button on the
message window. Any hints as to how to add keyboard equivalents to
those menu items are much appreciated (I'll probably try using
QuicKeys if not other solution presents itself).
* The interpretation of HTML is abysmally slow, seemingly much slower
than in 3.1.3 (although I never timed it with that version). NetBITS
issue #17 (a 66 kB document) takes 4 (four!) minutes to display on a,
admittedly probably overloaded, 7100/66. Communicator 4.04 uses 20
seconds to display the same document on the same machine. Eudora is 12
times slower! Who is going to wait 4 minutes for a normally sized HTML
document to display? Also, links within a document (i.e. pointing to
sections within the document one is reading) do not work.
* Every major Eudora release seems to make unnecessary, superficial
changes to the GUI. This time, icons rather than letters are used to
indicate the status of messages (read, sent, forwarded, etc.).
Normally, icons are preferred to text, but NOT when 1-letter acronyms
indicate perfectly what the status of mails is; much better than
greyish arrows that point every which way. An arrow pointing left
means a message was replied to!? Mails that are not yet read or sent
have a relatively obtrusive bluish dot indicating their status. For
queued messages the "Q" is retained, but it has been turned into a
fuzzy anti-aliased image rather than a crisp and clear letter. The
distinction between the standard signature and no signature is also
very unclear (just lighter shades of purple). Why not use e.g. a red
capital N for "no signature" or a purple John Hancock with a red
cross or bar over it? The icon representing priority is also very
unclear. In summary, the GUI has become more cluttered and much less
clear than in version 3.1.3. A monkey with half a brain would
probably have designed a better interface.
* One of my big gripes is that the indication of how much empty space
mailboxes contain is not updated immediately when messages get
deleted. Neither is the status of mailboxes with unread messages
(indicated by underlining of the mailbox name) updated when all
messages have been read. This worked fine in version 3.1.3 and takes
hardly any CPU time (considering that some bookkeeping operations
are necessary anyway).
As to relevant new features, there are none. Personally, I think that
especially revision of the find/search tool is long overdue:
* It should search all messages/mailboxes specified and return a complete
list of hits instead of returning one hit at the time. The search
results could be returned the way that "Find File" in the Finder does
it (e.g. in a window that is distinctly different from Eudora's mailbox
windows and the information in it disappears when the next search is
initiated) or in a Eudora mailbox (indistuinguishable from a regular
mailbox) with pointers to the original messages.
* One should not have to search either headers or bodies. Analogous to
"Find File," one should be able to specify sender, recipient, range of
dates, keywords in the subject, keywords in the text, or any combination
thereof.
I had hoped that Eudora 4 would be a major improvement over version 3.1.3,
but I have lost functionality, the interface is worse, the status of
mailboxes is not updated immediately anymore, and functionality that is
long overdue (a useful find/search tool) is still not there.
I am disappointed (will this qualify for the understatement of the year?).

Does it work on 8 and later or is there another version I should be

Subject: need help in shut-down or restart
Hello,
I hope there is some suggestion for a cure to this bothersome problem.
Ever since I upgraded to OS 8.1 I have had the following annoying
problem:
After using a number of programs and having my Mac on for an hour or
more,
when I go to restart or shut down it often happens that the desktop
icons
will disappear only to reappear without the system actually quitting.
Several items may then appear in the trash (identity unknown, usually
3
items amounting to 33K). Going to the Special Menu again to shut down
or
restart will then cause an actual shut down or restart. I'm wondering
what's going on.
Configuration: PowerCenter 150, 604 processor, 32 Meg Ram, OS 8.1,
Ram
Doubler.
Thanks,

For some reason, we cannot get a Color StyleWriter 2200 to work with a
PowerBook 5300cs. The printer prints the test page fine. The printer
works fine when hooked up to a PowerBook 160. The 5300 works fine with an
old original StyleWriter hooked to it. It does not work, however, with a
Color StyleWriter 2500, which seems to be common ground of some sort.
The 5300 is running MacOS 8.1. I have already tried the memory increase
tip given in the TIL.
Any ideas?

You'll find the orders of the filters to be the key. It sounds the

I would like to belatedly thank the MANY individuals who responded to my
questions concerning 56k modems/PPP, newsreading programs and MIME/UU decoders.
The response was overwhelming and I appreciate it. Try to get that quantity AND
quality of help for a pee cee platform!
I finally got my my modem working at 28800 and below by updating the firmware
off of a hidden page on the Hayes website. I am hopeful that v.90 will
stabilize things and improve compatibility even more.
I am happily using MT-Newswatcher. The MT makes all of the difference in the
world. I tried MacSOUP and haven't given up on it yet but when I add over about
100 newsgroups to my list, it crashes with a -42 error. It did it repeatedly
even after I doubled the application memory size.
I looked at about 5 uudecoders. I think I like STUU the best. Seems to be the
fastest. However, uuUndo will trash the .uu files automatically. That's kind of
neat. YA-Base64 is happily decoding base-64 stuff for me.
Again, thanks for all of the help and suggestions.

Subject: Word Graphics Filter Can't Be Found
Ben, I had this happen, except that it was the U.S. Dictionary that turned
up missing, and we later discovered also the Powerpoint ClipArt index (not
the art files themselves) had gone missing ("Application cannot complete
the requested function"). This timing was was after the new converters
were installed for both applications, and after OS 8.0, but before 8.1.
After copying them in from working "identical application-image" backups
failed, I finally completely reinstalled both applications from CD.
Whatever the problem, it destroyed not only the files, but also the
application's knowledge of their existence! Now running fine again (fine,
that is, for a M$ application) on both 8.0 and 8.1.

If you hold down these keys Cmd-Option-Shift-Delete until the Splash Screen
or StartupScreen loads this will make the Mac ignore the internal HD and
look on the SCSI chain for the next disk with an OS.
